I just attended the SID display week at the San Jose Convention Center.  The latest and greatest in displays was on display.  I met with Gordon Wetzstein from Stanford University, we both were looking at new tech that was being displayed at the innovation zone winners circle.  zebraimaging.com was presenting a new lightfield holographics display system and Scott Hill, their senior electronics engineer discussed with me at length their new technologies.

SeeFront was also at the show with new glasses free stereo3d monitors, using eyetracking to handle diverting the correct image to the correct eye.  They were in the Germany pavilion and we also discussed new lightfield tech they were looking at bringing to market.  Greg Truman with Forth Dimension Displays was there showing the latest technology from Kopin. We discussed the latest in lightfield technology and my time at Valve testing their HMD’s last year at their HQ in Washington.

Dr. Farrell was there from Stanford University along with Gordon Wetzstein giving talks in the conference rooms about the latest in research in lightfield and other technologies at Stanford.  I met Dr. Farrell several times previously at SCIEN events at Stanford.  Her talk today was very illuminating.

Also I got to see my old hero John Ho, with Emagin, he showed me their new 2k x 2k VR HMD.  For those not aware, in 2009 when first encountering palmer I was using an emagin z800 with dual input and quadro graphics cards on high end workstations for various projects.  It was good to reminisce with John about the old Z800 and how his product inspired so many people.  John was the product manager of the z800.

Hush Hush https://youtu.be/PsiGjQrnr8Y  Here is a  youtube 360 video I made with the ricoh theta while attending the San Francisco Virtual Reality #9 at Adobe HQ may 30 2015.

I met with Corvusvr with his Autistic Hippo Tango App with positional tracking on a mobile device!  Rothenberg was there checking out his demo. Corvus after you get rich don’t forget us little guys 😉

Damon Hernandez with the Web3D experts was the k3wlest kat in the kave, he knew where all the good beer was.

Eriks with immers.io was telling me about some k3wl new projects. Got to talk to Alex Sink, he really gets around.

Florian Hoenig with www.unbound.io taught me some k3wl things about lightfields.

Dino Labs by Feature Creep was there. I had met them at the Web3D galvanizd hackathon last weekend seeing their augmented reality dinosaurs. They were doing a project tango app that you could see dinosaurs at a museum, who needs Jurassic Park?   My buddy Kenny Nichols, Kdawg80 was as always giving me lots of assistance.  He was first in line for the Tilt Brush – Vive experience and said he loved the input solution.  Matt Sonic looks 2D even in 3D, he is in great shape, I need to lose a few pounds like him 😉 Lots of k3wl demos, one you had to find a kitty in the room, and another had a ducky with a fedora and machine gun. Leap Motion was there, Cade Peterson talked about new development initiatives.

Narcosis was there, I saw Eriks playing it. At GDC 2014 I had talked with marley magner, from the berklee school of music in Boston where he had just gotten a game degree. He was a 3d game audio expert and we had a meeting with Adam Sessler – formerly of G4tv about how Adam really liked Narcosis and was going to get Marley in touch with those guys for some 3D audio in the title. Ricoh Theta was there talking about their new developer competition where you can win 1 million yen. I laid my Ricoh Camera down and we talked about the latest and greatest in 360 video. Katie Goode, Design Pixie with Triangular Pixels showed me her latest work, they are famous for Smash Hit Plunder. Lilypad was showing off some new game, www.lilypadgame.com with Willie and Dee. Karl Krantz showed up sporting a fresh haircut, always looking dapper. Like danny DeVito used to say in that movie “LA Confidential” Remember dear readers, you heard it here first, on the QT, off the record, and always HUSH HUSH. 😉

Attended the lightfield display event at Marvell HQ last night with Mitch Williams.  I had attended the lightfield event with the SCIEN group at Stanford University a few months ago where I got to try the Oculus Crescent Bay and Otoy octane renderer technology.  Mitch Williams used to work for otoy and him and I just wont a VR hackathon event at Galvanize in san Francisco.  At the SCIEN Stanford event I was meeting with nvidia, Dr. Lanman of Oculus, and many others.  I was able to test some of the lightfield technology at this SCIEN event.

Dr Wetzstein gave us a preview of his Siggraph 2015 paper that focuses on new uses of lightfield technology in head mounted displays.  I found his new camera on velocity pixel tracking to be interesting.  He mentioned lumii, http://www.lumiidisplay.com/ a new startup using the latest in lightfield display technologies.  Also how this new tech could be used in glasses free televisions to provide new entertainment experiences.  Terrabytes per second of data streaming was mentioned.  I queried Gordon about this as Jaunt VR was just at the National Assocation of Broadcasters event saying Oculus’s strategy of 360  streaming of content like the National Basketball Association had many problems.  One being the consumer level pc’s having the CPU and GPU power for this, and the distribution networks to stream this media, with Jaunt VR in their keynote at NAB claiming the high speed fiber networks needed globally to do this streaming were not optimal and it would be sometime before they were.

If Wetzstein technology is incorporated soon, it could be an entirely new field of hmd’s and other displays that will be game changers.  Oculus did hire his colleague Lanman away from NVidia after all.  Gordon mentioned Toshiba and adobe having 4k and 8k displays at this point and how eye tracking would be important to the future of this technology in some ways.  I discussed the new FOVE eye tracking hmd with him and the eye tracking latencies involved in the technology.  ACM also mentioned that Dan Cook, my friend with eyemindbvr will be giving an ACM talk next month about nuerogaming and nuerofeedback.

Abstract

What if your mobile phone’s display would correct your vision deficiency instead of your glasses? Light field display technology can assess and correct the user’s vision. In this talk, we discuss a wide range of unconventional applications that are facilitated by light field technology, a novel inexpensive computational display technology. Light field displays are expected to be “the future of 3D displays”, although many believe that the recent hype about stereoscopic 3D displays is over. One reason why the consumers haven’t widely adopted 3D television can be the lack of a unique or useful enhancement of the 2D viewing experience. Wetzstein discusses why it is believed that a new technology – light field displays – delivering an experience that consumers haven’t adopted in the past will work in the future. The talk begins with a short historical review of light field displays and recent trends towards compressive light field display, followed by a discussion of applications in projection systems, vision assessment and correction, wearable displays, and a brief comparison to holography.

https://twitter.com/Web3DConsortium/status/602622496496455680  Mitch Williams and your humble blogger posting this article have just WON the x3d prize at the recent VR hackathon held at the Galvanize building in downtown san Francisco.  Mitch had a great idea for integrating a leap motion hand tracker into a webgl and x3d application.  The idea was to have a puppy chase after the ball that you would throw using the leap motion, or launch the ball into a basket.  Our models were very primitive as we had no graphic arists or 3d modelers on the team with us, most of those went on the sony Morpheus project that was also competing in the competition.  I have talked to mitch about using the dexmo – dextarobotics.com a force feedback hand input device to give tactile feedback to our future projects.  Alex Colgan from leap motion contacted us after we won the vr hackathon about more development assistance from Leap Motion.  Also matt sonic was trying to get us into the project tango hackathon this weekend using googles new project tango technology but Mitch was already busy with other projects.  Mitch has written a book on webgl and used to work for Otoy, famous for the octane renderer that even carmack has said is a game changer for mobile VR.

I was in attendance at SVVR 2015, the annual conference put on by karl krantz and crew.  Got to talk to cymatic bruce and Joe Ludwig during his panel on valve’s open VR.  I asked Joe about his card game, hard takeoff, involving FOOM, about AI’s taking over the planet like from that movie skynet.  Roger Nelson of synertial.com told me about his new glove and mocap suit solution and we met with Roger Davis for lunch.  As an investor in Grush I had a meeting with ethan schur and dr. wang as well at the same time.  Simon Solotko of turris showed me their new chair and I was the first to back their kickstarter, https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/840693394/turris-revolutionary-vr-seating-and-movement-contr  I got to meet with the new goog cardboard team, talking about new wide fov lens technologies they were working on, and a possible new game engine.  Dr. Jason Jerald discussed upcoming initiatives for SigGraph that he is on the committee for and they had a booth at SVVR.

Face shift had some interesting new technologies for motion capture of your face.  Philip Rosedale of High Fidelity gave an interesting talk on future metaverse initiatives and how they hope to acquire the VR metaverse root DNS.

Later in the day I got to test the perception neuron IMU suit.  They had a multi player game going and told me with an academic discount you could get the unit for under 1000.  The ricoh theta 360 camera was on sale at one of the booths, I picked one up for a little under 300 dollars, have been taking a ton of 360 photos.  Here is a 360 photo of myself, Roger Nelson, and Dan Cook, physicist, working on neurogaming and nuerofeedback devices.

R0010022

I had not seen brad davis (jherico) since he was working at Amazon, he was at the high fidelity booth, we talked for a bit about the open source issues and Linux and apple support being dropped from Oculus SDK’s.  I got to test the OSVR headset, I moderate the OSVR subreddit.  I specifically wanted to talk about leap motion – the hand tracking input solution – being integrated into OSVR.  OSVR should be out within a few months.  Fove also had their eye tracking technology there, and have had a successful kickstarter.  I think the auto IPD features that can assist IPD settings will make eye tracking technology like FOVE has integrated into more headsets.  Justin Moravetz talked about how his game Proton Pulse was doing on the google app store, had not seen him since the GDC 14 oculus after party at the thirsty bear.  Corby CorvusVR was there and got his “make it rain” app into the hands of palmer luckey who demoed it at the event.  Towards the end of the day I met with Neil Schnieder of MTBS3D and the ITA and we talked about his new immersive initiative and Ben Lang with roadtovr talked to me about the panel he hosted with Palmer and Amir, I thought ben did a good job.  Ela Darling, VR porn star had asked a question of Palmer about adult content in the future on VR systems.

Was recently at the annual Makerfaire in the bay area.  They had an electric car pavilion with the delorean from back to the future.  I was told you could get a new one for 40,000 from the factory.  There was a project there using hydraulics in an “exo suit” that was lots of fun.  Purchased a pebble watch that they had on sale for the show.  I use it now to do maps updates on the watch which connects to my phone over Bluetooth.  They also had a stereo3d section, with various artists up from Los Angeles talking about a 3d-space museum they wanted to start in LA.  Celine Tricart was manning the booth and I showed her my wearality 150 degree FOV virtual reality lenses.  https://twitter.com/CelineTricart?original_referer=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.digitalhollywood.com%2FWednesdaySp15.html&query=%23digitalhollywood&tw_i=596832518604607489&tw_p=embeddedtimeline&tw_w=510832348112232449

SvVr had a booth and were showing off elite dangerous and a few other vr experiences, I did not see Karl Krantz or Matt sonic around.  I did run into Rev Kyle there though and we talked a lot about the new happenings in VR.  I asked him to please do a podcast on Oculus announcing they were stopping Linux and apple support. Terabite was showing off their very high resolution photos.  Many were of insects that you could zoom in on with very high detail.  Also they had a fashion show with models wearing all sorts of cool costumes, I took one of a girl with green LED lights glowing all over her costume.

There was a “game of drones” event where drone quadcopters were in a battle to the death to see which robot drone could dominate.  The area was enclosed by netting so none of the spectators got hurt, reminded me of Mad Max 3, Beyond Thunderdome!  Right next to this display, Alan Yates, Chief Pharos at Valve Software was showing his new Valve Lighthouse technology.  They had several of the lighthouse trackers on hand and Alan took me through the components involved and how they expect to incorporate the technology using 3d printing, tracking of tools and even 3d printed objects, and even tracking drones and quadcopters!

Hello World!

This is my first blog post for International Immersion Industries. My name is Rob Wentworth, and I am known in various tech forums as GeekMaster.

I have a lot of existing content that I plan to migrate to this blog, and I will blog about other things I am working on, of which I am free to blog about.

I will post photos and immersive experiences here, including some s3d-360 photos which I captured recently at GDC 2015 and other places. To allow such 360-degree panoramic photos to be viewed here in your Flash, HTML5 & WebGLhere in an HTML5 capable web browser, we have installed the official WordPress plug-in called PanoPress.

And now to begin this journey, I will post this mini-submission to test that I actually CAN post here. TTYL!

Attended Augmented World Expo with Kevin Williams and Rob Wentworth.  Met Roger Nelson of Motionwerx, Jason Jerald of Nextgen, and David Nelson of USC – Palmer Luckey’s Lab Advisor.   The sweet Dr. Lemon also graced me with her company.  Manuel Novelo gave an interesting presentation, and so did Niel Trevett of Nvidia.  David Smith of Lockheed Martin announced some new wide FOV optics that he had helped develop.  Fascinating technology, what have those guys working on the F35 jet fighter come up with now over at skunkworks? 😉  They had an interesting theater group doing an augmented reality carnival where a beautiful Bulgarian Gypsy fortune Teller read my palm.  I felt like Ultima 6 had come true.

Ultima 6 Fortune Teller

Dave Martinez with Brickwork was a lot of fun to hang out with during the Meta Spaceglasses VIP event we attended.  Also the Sulon Cortex team was showing off their latest prototype, it was close to the valve VR demo I had tried earlier.  Just before AWE there was a scifi book convention and David Weber of Honor Harrington fame was there, geekmaster and myself got to talk to him at length and got some books signed.  (read On Basilisk Station by Weber if you haven’t already)

Mike Abrash extended an offer to see the Valve VR Demo Room at skytower in Bellevue.  Rob Hommel of www.f15sim.com attended with me.  We had just gotten our Epson BT-200 AR glasses and brought them with us and showed them off, a former employee of MVIS now with Valve said it reminded him of some of the old military VR/AR projects he had worked on.  Doug Church of Valve was kind enough to set up a convenient time for us to test the VR demo last wednesday.  Turns out one of the employees at Valve is a cool flight sim fan too with his own F104 starfighter simulator and we promised to get him into the F15 Simulator.  Was told there were 2 screens 1440P each, never running below 95 FPS.  Sense of presence was amazing, none of the screen door or blur I have associated with previous HMD’s.

This demo was rather fascinating, smooth motion, incredible graphics.  I felt like I was on a borg ship perhaps from star trek.

Gene was not able to attend that demonstration but is hoping to get into the Valve VR room at some later date.  Everyone at Valve was very courteous and engaging.  A great bunch of guys.  I said after such an amazing demo who do I write the 2 billion dollar check too? 😉
